Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club
Originally hired to consolidate the work of four creative agencies and build an in-house design team to support the various brands within the Ducks organization. The first objective was to oversee the transition from the Mighty Ducks to the Anaheim Ducks. This included touch points that ranged from print, special events, mobile, web, in-game and television. The new look represented a fresh and dramatic new direction for the 13-year-old team in a market with steep competition. A bold orange was chosen to accent gold and black as a reminder of its surrounding county and this was reflected in playful new ways that hadn’t been previously available. Over four seasons, I had the absolute honor to work for some of the best talents and by far the best organization in all of professional sports.
The Playoffs
Ask anyone that year, and they could feel the Ducks were going all the way. With an unbelievable point streak to begin the season they played hard all year and won the division title. With each round of the playoffs, the anticipation grew until we reached the Stanley Cup Final against the Ottawa Senators. The final game was mostly uncontested and as the minutes ticked away, the inevitable celebration was coming together.
An all-night VIP party was the culmination of all the hope and excitement that came with the first California team to win the Cup. I have yet to match the sheer volume and momentum of work produced over the course of that season and the following summer celebrating and traveling with the Stanley Cup.
With the help of Andrew and Anjula Caldwell, we set out to document the Stanley Cup’s tour across the greater Orange County Area. From Camp Pendleton to Griffith Park to the bosom of the Pacific, we raced to capture as many locations as possible while making a few people sick in the backseat of the van. Their talented work can be seen throughout the Cups’ journey that summer with brilliant execution.
With each new season came an opportunity to try a new look and feel for the collateral. Along with designing the look and feel for each season, I was also responsible for the special events and community relations projects. The Rinks program was a particularly significant project to be a part of. It started with rebranding the existing Anaheim Ice rink and turned into a youth hockey initiative that brings hockey to Southern California kids and teens through a network of ice and inline rinks.
